I have searched far and wide to find the “right one”; the right product to cleanse and condition my coarse, naturally wavy, color treated (read: dry as dust/damaged) hair. I have been infatuated with others in the past (who shall remain nameless), but they were either chemical laden or simply couldn’t live up to my expectations. Inevitably, each would break my heart and leave my hair unchanged or worse, in shoddier shape.

Day at the beach: Solar Recover

I'll save the facts about the harsh UV rays from Florida's intense sunshine, but we've all experienced it first hand.  These beautiful beaches and salty waters of ours aren't easy on your skin or hair, and even a brief day trip can leave you over-sunned and parched. 

Solar Recover Save Your Skin is a best seller at Wild Ginger Apothecary for good reason:  it's easy to use, powerful yet light, and refreshing.  Even in a hurry, it's my go-to hydration.  It's a favorite trick to touch up when my arms and legs are dry throughout the day, I can spray easily without a greasy residue potentially trashing my outfit.  You can't spray it too much, and trust me, I've tried.

The Save Your Hair spray is the equivalent in a hair rescue.  Spray post sun-scorched beach day and your hair won't feel like straw for long.  You can spray out of the shower as a light de-tangler, too - a favorite solution for my thin straight hair in lieu of a heavier conditioner.  

There's not much you need on a beautiful day besides a beach towel, swimsuit, and SPF... but you'll be grateful once you add this duo to that mix.

Beach Party: Little Barn Apothecary's Hair Texturizer

You know those days on the beach that you couldn't care less how you look?  The sweaty, sandy relief found in those salt water swims... and the resulting beachy waves from throwing your hair up impulsively (only to to be washed out upon getting home).

I had a good beachy hair day once at home.  For about an hour, on a day I wasn't going anywhere.  Kind of like those days I take down my hair 'do and it looks amazing only for me to sleep on it.  My paper straight, thin hair won't hold a curl, despite every extreme hair spray on the market (in my pre-natural guru / Wild Ginger Apothecary days).  Creating textured waves was equally out of the question.

I tried a few dozen salt sprays (see also: chemical-filled styling products with a  splash of salt), nothing safe and natural cut it.  Until Little Barn Apothecary's Jasmine + Ocean Water Hair Texturizer.  Spray it, scrunch it, braid it, let it go.  It's the closest thing to a much needed beach day you can get on those 9-5 workdays... with ingredients as pure and basic as the sea itself.

Is "no-poo" for you?

By now, everyone in the natural health scene has at least read about the "no-poo" method of washing your hair.  Perhaps you've read about those who have given up cleansing all together, just rinsing with water.  Others tout baking soda and apple cider vinegar rinses.  It all sounds great until it comes to executing this hair-care adventure.

I'm rigid about only carrying products at Wild Ginger Apothecary that I have used and believe in.  I repeat it over and over again because of products like Mud Puddle Hair Wash.  I was amazed to stumble across something so basic, so natural, and so pure that I had to try it.  And I was glad I did!

Mud Puddle isn't a hair wash like it describes.  It's hair mud.  A thick, gel-like clay glob that is unlike anything you've tried before.  Bentonite clay (detoxifying for everything it touches) pulls impurities from your hair and scalp to gently clean. And one thing is for sure: it doesn't get safer than this for cleansing your hair.  The adjustment period is trying (especially for longer hair) but eventually you're left with soft, healthy hair that will be grateful to be free of harsh cleansing agents.  That means a happier scalp, less hair damage, and less frequency of washing!

Is the idea of hair mud too wild for you to try just yet?  There is a middle road you can take.  I learned to love shampoo bars after my fourth broken arm.  (No jokes about being accident prone, please.)  Try applying, then lathering, gel-based shampoo with one arm!  Shampoo bars were a miracle for ease of use, by simply rubbing over my hair to apply.  And my hair (and scalp) were much more agreeable with the switch.

Want to break away from sulfate-filled conventional shampoo?  A good start is the Herban Lifestyle Shampoo Bar.  It's eco-friendly with no bottle, and made only with minimally processed organic oils.  You get 40-60 shampoos in one bar, too, making it a bargain for $10.  Once you try it, you can do an apple cider vinegar rinse (1:4 ratio with water) every few weeks for extra clarifying.  (You can try this regardless of the cleansing method you use - you'll love it!)

Give one or both of these a shot, and maybe the "no-poo" method with be for you!
